Re: locating functional demands data for occupations, OaSIS/SIPeC (O*Net) rates load handling demands for a given occupation in terms of “Proficiency or Complexity Levels” (Lowest, Low, Moderate, High, Highest). I cannot locate any information to explain what those “levels” mean in terms of measurable load demands or real numbers. E.g., If a client is restricted from handling loads in excess of 10 kg, where does that fit within this framework? Would be “Moderate”, for instance? And how would one know? Thanks for any insights. — Tara

    Good afternoon Tara,

It is good to hear from you! I think ESDC plans to quantify physical demands in OaSIS sometime this year, likely using the Matheson physical demands scale. So, you would get a measure of weight and frequency. In the meantime, we have to fall back on the Career Handbook. You can also crosscheck with job ads to get a sense of physical demands for a given occupation. You can also refer to the Occupational Requirements Survey (American source) for a good overview of cognitive and physical demands (the latest dataset is available in Excel format here). These occupations are classified with the SOC 2018. There is a concordance table (a little dated) between the NOC 2016 v. 1.3 and the SOC 2018 here:https://www.statcan.gc.ca/en/statistical-programs/document/soc2018US-noc2016v1_3.
