Dear colleagues,
I have had the pleasure of organizing a consultation project over the past few weeks for ESDC’s upcoming Career Handbook Offline Advanced Search Tool. As you probably know by now, the advanced search function on the Career Handbook web portal will no longer be available after October 31, 2024. This offline tool will be made available as a replacement and will replicate the functionality of the web version.
In order to ensure this tool meets your needs, I put together a team, from our great CAVEWAS board of directors, to review the beta version of this tool. We had our last meeting with ESDC on September 18 and provided valuable feedback to ensure everything is working as it should.
We have also recommended ESDC to implement multifactorial searches, which is currently not possible. The requested feature would allow combining search criteria from several physical demands and/or other factors, such as a search for all limited strength occupations that only involve sitting or a combination or sitting, standing and walking. This type of search is really helpful with injured workers.
ESDC has agreed to try adding this feature and we can expect the final version of this tool to be released before the end of October.
Please share your thoughts. Do you think this offline tool will be useful in your practice? Do you currently make use of the Career Handbook advanced search function on the web portal?
I will be posting updates here as they come!

Just a quick update that the offline tool for the Advanced Search has been developed and can now be requested by emailing NC-CNP-NOC-GD@hrsdc-rhdcc.gc.ca. This tool emulates the functionality of the online search function and is available in French and English. I have requested adding the ability to perform searches with multiple physical demands and a cross-search functionality. I have been informed by ESDC that these requests will be revisited once they have the necessary resources and time.
How do you make use of the advanced search function? Is that an important source for your work?

Have you used it yet and have any tips that you think would be helpful for other VRs? Regarding your question above, I use the Advanced Search function with every evaluation I complete, but the specific search tool function I utilize is the descriptor scale ratings and rarely the other functions. How about you, what do you find most useful?
November 14, 2024 at 10:24 pm #2082Francois ParadisParticipantHello Heather,
Yes, please feel free to share this info with your colleagues. I have tested the offline tool and it is useful to a point. multifactorial searches for physical demands and aptitudes are not possible and this is what I use the most in the CH. Anyway, I think next year, we will be able to use the OaSIS for physical demands. I also expect ability and skill tests adapted to the OaSIS should be released in the near future.
